5-part analyzers commonly use laser flow cytometry or combined optical technologies. This extra information is what allows the finer five-way classification.
WBC Differential Detail
- 3-part differential reports three WBC groups: lymphocytes, mid-sized cells (a mixed group), and granulocytes. It gives a useful but coarse picture — enough to flag many infections and abnormalities, but not to distinguish specific cell types.
- 5-part differential reports five specific subtypes: neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. This finer breakdown supports the detection of conditions such as allergies (eosinophilia), parasitic infections, and certain blood disorders, and provides a more complete result to clinicians.
For most routine screening, 3-part data is sufficient. For hematology-heavy patient populations, the extra detail of a 5-part differential has clinical value.

5-part analyzers are generally positioned for higher workloads, while 3-part models are often chosen for smaller laboratories. Throughput is stated per model, so compare the number directly against your daily sample intake rather than assuming a category norm.
